Silicon Sealant and choosing the correct type for use around electronics
Silicon sealant is widely used in our industry to mount, seal, and weatherproof many products from intercoms to access control and surveillance.
This itself is not an issue however many times the wrong type of sealant is being used and it will have an effect on the performance and longevity of the product it is used with.
Put simply - acid cure silicon should NEVER be used to seal electronic items to an install surface
- Neutral Cure Silicon is the ONLY type that should be used, standard acid cure sealants will off-gas Acetic acid during the curing process and this will damage the solder and traces on the PCB resulting in a failure which will NOT be covered under waranty. Acid cure silicon will also damage brickwork, metal housings and more if used - it must be avoided!
- Acid cure silicon in many cases will smell like vinegar when applied but this is not the only sign of the wrong silicon being used, be sure to check your chosen sealant carefully
- The gas given off during the cure, in high enough concentration can also form into a liquid and appear as droplets on the inside of camera lenses, this is unlikely to disappear from the natural heat of the product in use and will cause premature failure of the product and is unlikely to be covered by any manufacturers warranty
